
Getting High-Density IR Heat into Mobile Glass Rigs
Trying to squeeze a bottle annealing furnace into a mobile repair bracket is a bit of a headache. You’re basically fighting a war between how much space you have and how much heat you actually need. When your voltage is limited and your workspace is tiny, the usual heating elements just won’t do the job. That’s why we switched to miniaturized short-wave IR lamps. It lets us hit that glass softening point without needing a giant oven taking up the whole bench. The struggle with power and space In a mobile setup, power is rarely stable. You’re dealing with fluctuating inputs and cramped circuitry. To get the wattage we need out of a tiny tube, we just crank up the power density. We use high-grade quartz envelopes so we can push more current through a shorter filament. It works. You get a tiny lamp that puts out intense, localized heat. But here’s the catch: when you pack that much heat into a small area, your bracket housing has to be tough. If it’s not rated for extreme temperatures, you’re just going to melt your own frame. The nitty-gritty on design We went with short-wave IR emitters because they punch through glass way faster than long-wave versions. It means you aren’t sitting around waiting for things to warm up. For the connections, we stick to R7s or SK15 bases. It’s not just about making it easy to plug in. These things stay put. You don’t want your electrical contacts vibrating loose while you’re moving the rig around. Making it work in the real world To keep from accidentally overheating the glass, we wire these lamps into a PID-controlled loop. Since the heating zone is so small, the temperature drops off fast once you move away from the lamp. You have to be precise. If the lamps aren’t positioned just right, you’ll end up with cold spots. And a word of warning: don’t just throw more wattage at the problem without adding a heat shield. If you do, you’ll probably fry the electronics sitting right next to the heater. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between focused energy and not melting your gear.
