
Stop Wasting Power on Your Glass Annealing
Let’s be honest: glass annealing furnaces are absolute power hogs. Most shops are still using old-school resistive heating. The problem there is that you’re basically paying to heat up a giant box of air just to get the heat to actually touch the glass. It’s a waste of money and a waste of time. We do things differently. We use short-wave infrared (IR) lamps that hit the glass directly. It’s fast. Really fast. Instead of waiting for a whole chamber to warm up, IR lamps kick in almost instantly. Since you’re using radiation instead of convection, you aren’t fighting to keep a massive volume of air hot. The energy goes straight into your workpiece, not into the furnace walls. Your electric bill will thank you. As for the gear, we keep it simple. We use tungsten filaments inside high-purity quartz envelopes. The best part? You don’t have to tear out your entire control cabinet or spend a weekend rewiring everything. We use standard industrial connectors like R7s or SK15, so these are pretty much drop-in replacements. We’ll just spec the voltage and wattage to fit whatever grid you’re already running. And if you’re working with thicker glass, we’ve got you covered. Some of our tubes have special coatings that help the heat soak deeper into the material so you don’t end up scorching the surface while the middle stays cold. But here is the thing you need to watch out for:heat density. IR lamps put out a lot of concentrated heat. It’s great for your cycle times, but it can be hard on your cooling fans. If your cabinet ventilation isn’t up to the task, you’re going to trip your breakers or, worse, melt some wiring. Do yourself a favor and check your airflow before you make the switch. One last tip from the shop floor: make sure your contacts are tight. A loose connection at the lamp base causes arcing, and that’ll kill your filament way faster than it should. Get the installation right, and these lamps can take a beating in a 24/7 production environment without you having to baby them.
