
The Struggle with Long Heat Zones in Tunnel Kilns
Most infrared lamps are, well, short. That’s fine for a small oven, but if you’re running a glass tunnel kiln and need a heat zone longer than two meters, off-the-shelf bulbs just aren’t going to work. You can’t just slap a bunch of small ones together and hope for the best. That’s why we build ultra-long Quartz halogen emitters. We design them specifically to sit end-to-end so you get one long, steady stretch of heat.
Getting the Power Right
Here is the tricky part: when you stretch a halogen tube out, the electrical resistance changes. If you aren’t careful, you end up with “cold spots” at the ends while the middle is screaming hot. Nobody wants that. We spend a lot of time balancing the tungsten filament load. The goal is to make sure the heat is consistent from the first inch to the last, without burning out the center. Just a heads-up—you’ll want to double-check that your power supplies can actually handle the amperage these long units pull.
Why Quartz Matters
We use high-purity quartz glass for a reason. It lets the filament run hot—really hot—without leaving that nasty tungsten buildup on the inside of the walls. For tunnel kilns, we usually suggest packing the lamps tight against each other. No gaps. No dips in radiation. To make sure they actually survive the trip to your factory and the stress of a 24/7 production cycle, we add reinforced end-caps. It keeps the glass from snapping when things get hot and expand.
The Real-World Stuff
Wiring these up isn’t something you can just wing. We provide custom connectors because the current is high enough to melt standard sockets if you aren’t careful. But let’s be honest: a two-meter glass tube is fragile. It’s a big piece of glass. If your kiln vibrates, those lamps will break. Period. You’ve got to use mounting brackets that isolate the lamps from the machine’s shake, or you’re just going to be replacing bulbs every other week. And don’t forget the air. These things put out a massive amount of heat. If you don’t have a solid cooling plan for the chassis, you might find your kiln frame starting to warp. Not a great look.
