Quartz glass is tough, but it’s not invincible. Even with its low thermal expansion, it’ll snap the second you hit it with a sudden spike of uneven heat. It’s frustrating. You’re right there in the tempering process, and one wrong move leads to a shattered workpiece. To get “instant tempering” right, you need a heat source that can pivot in milliseconds. That’s why we lean on short-wave infrared (IR) lamps. They give us the kind of rapid power control you just can’t get with traditional heaters. The secret is in the modulation. You can’t just blast the glass with heat and hope for the best. If you use slow-heating elements, you’re asking for trouble. Short-wave IR is different—it hits the quartz surface and penetrates immediately. But the real magic happens when you pair those lamps with SCR power controllers. This lets you tweak the wattage on the fly. Think of it as “softening” the way the heat enters and leaves the glass. It keeps the temperature stable across the whole piece. If your power modulation lags even a little? You’ll see those dreaded stress fractures. Talking hardware We usually go with high-wattage halogen filaments inside high-purity quartz envelopes. The beauty of the short-wave spectrum is that the energy actually goes into the glass, rather than just warming up the air around it. One quick tip: check your wiring. Seriously. Make sure your connectors are rated for peak current. I’ve seen too many undersized cables overheat and burn out because they couldn’t handle the load of a full IR bank. It’s a headache you don’t want. The trade-off Here’s the thing: high-density IR heating is incredibly fast, but it creates a lot of waste heat. While the glass is getting hot, the lamp housings and reflectors are soaking up a massive amount of thermal energy. If your ventilation isn’t strong enough to pull that heat away from the lamp ends, you’re going to kill your filaments. You might even blow a connector. Keep that airflow consistent, and your lamps will actually last.
