
How to Keep Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Dry)
Putting a recessed infrared heater in a bathroom is a bit like putting a computer in a rainstorm. You’ve got steam everywhere and the constant threat of water splashes. You can’t just use a basic housing and hope for the best; that’s a recipe for disaster. The real battle happens where the heating element meets the power supply. That’s where we focus all our energy.
Dealing with the Damp
Here’s the thing about humidity: it makes air and surfaces way more conductive than they should be. To stop electricity from wandering where it doesn’t belong, we use high-grade ceramic insulators and silicone gaskets. If those fail, you’re looking at a ground fault. Not a great feeling. We also wrap the internal wiring in cladding that handles both heat and moisture. This stops the wires from cracking and fraying every time the heater turns on and off.
The Seal Deal
A recessed fixture has to be airtight against your ceiling. We use IP-rated enclosures to make sure moisture never even touches the electrical terminal block. And the quartz glass tube? We seal that with high-temp gaskets. It keeps the steam from creeping into the voltage rails. **But listen, don’t skip this part:**make sure the unit is wired into a GFCI circuit. Even with the best insulation in the world, condensation can still happen inside the housing. A GFCI is your safety net. It’s the “just in case” that keeps everyone safe.
Heat, Cold, and the “Sweat” Factor
These heaters go from room temperature to blistering hot in a few seconds. That kind of thermal shock makes materials expand and shrink, which can pull a seal right open. To fix this, we use materials that expand at the same rate. They move together, so the seal stays tight. There is a catch, though. If you seal it too tight and block the vents, the unit can actually “sweat” inside as it cools down. That trapped moisture leads to corrosion on the contact pins over time. It’s all about finding that sweet spot—keeping the water out while letting the unit breathe.
