
Why Your IPX4 Infrared Heaters Keep Shorting Out (And How to Fix It)
If you’ve ever had an infrared heater die on you, you probably noticed it usually happens at the lead-out point. It’s a classic headache. Here’s what’s actually happening: in those splash-proof (IPX4) setups, moisture finds a way into the spot where the heating element meets the wiring. When you mix water with the intense heat of an IR lamp, the insulation just gives up. It chars, turns to carbon, and then—pop—you’ve got a short circuit.
The problem with “cheap” seals
Most generic heaters rely on basic shrink-wrap or some low-grade silicone. That stuff just can’t handle the heat. Over time, the constant heating and cooling cycles bake the sealant until it cracks. Once there’s a tiny fissure, humidity and water splashes move right in. We see this all the time in industrial wash-down areas or those humid PET blowing lines. It’s a recipe for failure. To stop this, we do things differently. We use high-temperature fluorosilicone or specialized ceramic-to-metal seals. These materials stay flexible and keep the electricity where it belongs, even when the lamp is cranking out max wattage.
Dealing with thermal aging
The real goal here is to stop “thermal aging.” When your insulation starts to fail, the resistance at the connection point starts jumping around. That creates a hotspot. If you aren’t using a properly sealed lead-out, you’re basically waiting for the terminal to burn out. We design our seals to match the actual heat footprint of the lamp. For example, if you’re using a high-density shortwave tube, we recess or shield the seal. Otherwise, the direct radiation just cooks the wire jacket.
One thing to keep in mind
There is a trade-off. Better sealing makes the unit a bit more rigid. You won’t have as much “wiggle room” when you’re wiring it into a tight machine. Just make sure your cable routing is a bit more generous. If you bend those leads too sharply, you’ll put mechanical stress on the seal and risk ruining that IPX4 rating you paid for. Give it some space to breathe, and it’ll last much longer.
