
Why Your Infrared Heaters Actually Die (And How We Fix It)
Here is a little secret about infrared towel rails: it’s rarely the heating element that gives out. Most of the time, the element is just fine. The real culprit? The lead-in wires. Think about it. You’ve got a tube getting incredibly hot, and right where the electrical wire enters that tube, you have a massive temperature swing. Cheap heaters just slap some basic glue on that joint. But glue cracks when it gets hot and cold over and over again. Eventually, it just quits.
The slow decay of “cheap” wires
When you keep running high heat through standard insulation, it starts to oxidize. It gets brittle. Then it shrinks. Suddenly, you’ve got a bare wire exposed. Now, throw this into a steamy, humid bathroom, and you’re asking for trouble. You’ll either get a dead short or a nasty tracking issue. We see this all the time with those “budget” units that use a simple bead of silicone for a seal. It just doesn’t cut it.
How we actually seal them
We do things differently to keep those shorts from happening. First, we strip the lead wire and get it surgically clean—no oxidation allowed. Then, we use a glass-ceramic sealant. Instead of just sitting on top like glue, this stuff actually fuses to the wall of the tube. It creates a barrier that moisture and air simply can’t get through. But we don’t stop there. We make sure the transition from the stiff tube to the flexible cable is gradual. If that transition is too abrupt, the wire can snap during installation or just pop under the pressure of thermal expansion.
A few things to keep in mind
Now, there is a trade-off. Because our sealing is heavy-duty, the wire is a bit stiffer. You can’t just bend these wires at a sharp angle right next to the seal. If you do, you risk cracking the glass. You’ll want to make sure your housing gives the wire plenty of room to curve naturally. And one last thing: the seal is great, but it isn’t magic. If you cram these into a tiny space without any way for the leads to breathe, the outer jacket will still age. The seal stops the short circuit, but the air temperature around the wire still decides how long the jacket lasts. Keep it cool, and it’ll last a lifetime.
