If that temperature dips for even a second, you’re looking at thermal shock or weird viscosity issues that ruin the whole batch. And when your glass parts are oversized? The Headache of Long-Format Tubes
Here’s the thing: you can’t just take a standard heating element and stretch it out. If you do, you’ll run into voltage drops and thermal expansion that’ll wreck your equipment. We handle this by obsessing over the wattage-per-centimeter. We tweak the winding density and the thickness of the quartz tube so the center doesn’t sag or burn out early. It keeps the temperature curve flat and predictable. Plus, we use higher voltage configurations. It keeps the current manageable over those long runs, which means your wiring doesn’t get overloaded and your electrical leads don’t turn into heaters themselves.
Building a Wall of Heat
To get that “continuous” feel, we use a tight-pitch array. Depending on the shape of your glass, we’ll stagger the lamps or line them up in a grid. We use high-grade quartz for the envelopes because it lets the short-wave heat punch through without any interference. But the real secret is in the mounting. This is where a lot of engineers trip up. For anything over 2 meters, we usefloating mounts. Quartz expands and contracts when it gets hot. If you pin it down too tight, the tubes will literally snap under their own stress. Floating mounts give the glass room to breathe.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
We design these to be drop-in replacements because nobody wants their kiln sitting idle for a week. You can wire them right into your existing zones. But a word of warning: a 2-meter array puts out a massive amount of heat. It’s going to soak your kiln housing. Make sure your exhaust ventilation is actually strong enough to pull that ambient heat away. If you don’t, you might find your tunnel frame starting to warp.
