When you’re building an infrared heater for a bathroom, the waterproof rating (IP65) is actually the easy part. The real headache? The light. Standard short-wave IR lamps are basically spotlights. They blast out a high-intensity glare that’s not just annoying—it can actually stress your eyes. And if you’ve got a baby in the house, whose eyes are way more sensitive than ours, that’s a huge problem. Getting the warmth without the glare We fixed this by messing with the spectrum. Instead of just using raw quartz, we use specific halogen gas fills and specialized coatings. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for the lamp. It blocks those harsh blue-light peaks and UV rays but lets the cozy, mid-to-long wave heat slide right through. You get that “warm hug” feeling on your skin, but you aren’t squinting the whole time you’re drying off. The struggle with water and heat Here’s the thing: trying to make something waterproof while it’s glowing hot is a bit of a contradiction. To get that IP65 seal, we use high-temp silicone gaskets and reinforced glass. This keeps the steam and splashes from causing a short circuit. But you have to be careful with the materials. If you go cheap and use plastic for the casing, the heat will eventually warp the seal. Then your “waterproof” heater starts leaking. That’s why we stick to die-cast aluminum or tempered glass. It stays tight, even after hundreds of uses. The trade-off Now, there is a catch. Because we’re cutting out the blinding light, these lamps aren’t quite as “intense” as the ones used in industrial drying plants. You lose a tiny bit of raw heat density, but in a bathroom? You won’t even notice. It’s a fair trade for not needing sunglasses in the shower. One quick tip if you’re installing these into a commercial setup: check your controllers. Halogen filaments can have a big “inrush” of current when they first kick on. If your breakers are too sensitive, they might trip the moment you flip the switch. Just something to keep in mind.
